ROCHESTER TOWN CLERK ARCHIVAL COLLECTIONS
The records of the Town of Rochester date back to the 17th century and are maintained by the Town Clerk's office, stored in the town vault. Beginning in 1995, the Town Clerk's office began restoration and preservation of the historic volumes held in the vault. In addition to the historic volumes, other material of historical significance had been loosely organized and stored. Often this material was not identified in such a way it could be easily located.
The Rochester Historical Commission had long been concerned that the over 350 years of documents stored in the Town Hall vault were in danger of being lost through improper storage methods. In addition, it was difficult to identify what records were in the collections. In 2011, the Historical Commission applied for and received a grant through the Massachusetts Cultural Council to hire a professional archivist to process the collection and create an inventory of the contents.
